From
the days he began DJ-ing in 1985, Jeremy Boon has evolved over time
to become one of Singapore's most influential DJs, as well as a force
to be reckoned with on the international scene. Rainer Truby has given
the thumbs up for this man, and "Shit Hot" is how London
maestro Gilles Peterson describes him. From Hip Hop in the early 1980s
to almost every sub genre of electronic music that has popped up since
then, Jeremy has been a prime driving force behind the latest music
in Singapore.
Few know that he was the one who played some of the FIRST records
within Zouk's wall's, and the only one since Zouk's birth to continue
playing there with a strong residency and following. Jeremy initially
started off in Zouk's main room with DJ Alfredo from Ibiza (another
key DJ in the international arena that influenced DJs like Nicky Holloway
and Paul Oakenfold to kick start the UK scene). He was there for about
6 years, constantly exposing people to the latest in dance music as
well as playing alongside the best DJs in the world before moving
on to be resident of Velvet Underground in 1997, a new room in Zouk's
premises.
Velvet
has been his playground ever since, a place where he has the opportunity
not just to continue breaking new ground, but also playing the kind
of music that matters most.
One could say that Velvet gave Jeremy the chance to really grow musically
and as a DJ. As the tempos got faster and the beats got harder, his
integrity remained very much intact, choosing to educate clubbers
not just in new forms of dance music, but exposing them to the roots
of it, whether it be Afro, Latin, Funk, Soul and of course, Jazz.
As he puts it himself, "I believe these are the basics that everyone
will understand. It has and will always be around."
Although Velvet is known to most as a House club, he always treads
the line and frequently crosses it - most DJs would know that having
a residency and at the same time pushing the boundaries musically
is a gargantuan task, but Jeremy has managed to cut right in between
and provide the best of both worlds.
However, restless a soul as Jeremy is, DJ-ing alone is not enough
- he has since moved on to production as well, a road frequently taken
by the best and most capable DJs. He has been involved in remix projects
for Hong Kong diva Sandy Lam as well as Singaporean rapper Sheikh
Haikel.
