dj / producer
/ radio presenter / journalist / vinyl junkie...
Ennio
Styles got involved in production, record collecting and then DJing
in Melbourne from his early teens, after realising that he had no
future in breaking, graffiti and MCing. His love of the funkiness
of Native Tongues-era hip hop and the electronics of early house soon
led him to discover and pursue an ever-expanding range of soulful
sounds from old funk, jazz, brazilian and latin on the one hand, to
detroit techno, drum & bass and broken beats on the other.
His radio show Stylin represents this spectrum, and has brought the
likes of Cut Chemist, Herbert, London Elektricity, Mad Mats, Seiji,
Oneness of Juju, DJ Food, Metro Area and Badmarsh & Shri to the
airwaves through interviews and guest DJ mixes, as well as becoming
a focal point for emerging local producers. The Stylin newsletter
and playlist is published online and received weekly by hundreds of
music lovers worldwide.
Ennio Styles’ DJ sets have been heard alongside Melbourne’s
finest jazz musicians as well as visitors like Jazzanova, Mark de
Clive-Lowe, Daniel Magg, Justin Chapman (Kemetic Just), Kaidi Tatham,
Recloose, Soul Jazz Sound System, Mark Grant, Chris Duckenfield, Charles
Webster, BNX and Minus 8. He runs the weekly Open Sesame party with
Kano at Honkytonks, regularly DJs at Revolver and other venues and
one-off events like Livid and Summadayze. He has been involved in
many of Melbourne’s classic nights based in the soulful side
of dance music, including Cocoa Butter, Goin Places, Cookin With Gas
and Egg.
He is a regular contributor to Australian dance music press including
interviews in Zebra, weekly charts in Play and the Trainspotters’
Corner column in TRM, focussing on connections between new releases
and the music of the past.
His compilation album Other-Worldly Fusions with regular DJ-partner
Kano has been released through Hardware/Shock to glowing praise like
“timeless” and “one of the best for 2002”.
Ennio Styles is one of the founders of the Local People record label
and collective. His tune Psybossa (with Lanu) features on Local People
EP 001, having received overwhelming reactions from global scene leaders
like Rainer Truby, Patrick Forge and Straight No Chaser magazine.
Psybossa
has been licensed by Spanish label So Dens for the Passport compilation
which also features tracks by Blaze and the Strike Boys. It will also
appear on Moonlight Recordings Vol 3 alongside Rae & Christian,
Llorca, RJD2 and Gotan Project.
Ennio
has recently completed a remix of a 1960s Czech jazz tune for London’s
Cosmic Sounds record label, to be released in early 2003 alongside
remixes from Eddy & Dus, Les Gammas and Nicola Conte. His next
remix will be for the highly-respected Compost label.
