Decksugeon's foray into the DJ world began at the young age of 14 in 1989 when he was inspired by what a DJ could do by manipulating various pieces of vinyl between the cross-fader of a mixer. Inspired by the then booming hip-hop culture in the late 80s, the turntable tricks inspired him to begin making his own mix-tapes re-mixes. Using a simple cut and paste technique on a tape deck, a method similar to what DJs like Frankie Knuckles used to do, he created his own reedits of songs. He got his first proper invitation to play regularly in a club much later in 1996 after having played from house parties to college orientation programmes. - "The break was out of the blue actually, there was a new club that was looking for DJs and one night I decided to go down and have a look one night on the eve of a holiday, I asked the then resident DJ, Shawn Tulsi, if there were any opportunities to play. He told me to come back on Monday with my bag of records so he could hear me out - Then 15 minutes later he needed to go to the toilet and told me to take over! When he got back, I was ready to hand control of the decks back to him but he insisted that I kept on playing." This certainly sounded like a fairytale come true for any DJ, but that night rocked and Decksurgeon became the co-resident for the Fridays and Saturdays for the next 10 months in the club together with Shawn. Sadly though, he had to leave for the UK to go to university in September 1997 but continued playing and keeping up with current trends in the dance scene.
Decksurgeon has moved into almost every avenue of the music scene. Besides regular DJing, he formerly was the UK Correspondent for Juice Magazine (OCL Publishing, Singapore) for a period of 3 years (from 1997-2000) and kept the entire island up to date with the latest dance music news in a monthly column 'Sound Taste'. His latest DJ Competition title was winning the 'Blessed DJ Competition' held by the world famous Republic
Besides having a busy university schedule and other commitments to attend to, he always manages to find time for his one passion - house music. There's word out that he's been into the studio whenever he can to collaborate on various as yet unreleased projects and may have a label and production house somewhere in the future. "In reality right now I'm too caught up trying to finish off my degree. But there's no ruling out that I may take a firm step into the music business one day. I am a firm believer that young kids out there nowadays should finish school and not burn their bridges - then they can go on later and do anything they want in life. It was Paul Oakenfold who once said this in a magazine somewhere in 1992 when he first came to Singapore." Style
