From
winning MUZIK Magazine’s coveted DJ competition in 2002 and
being hailed as “the most exciting upcoming deejay around”
by Mixmag he has not looked back. In ditching a straight out/pigeon-holed
stance to deejaying and playing across the board from jazz-funk to
punk-funk to soulful house to deep disco he inadvertently put himself
alongside the forerunners in a growing trend around London. Indeed,
in the UK, this new eclectic approach by deejays has probably been
the most significant development in the dance scene in the past few
years.
Wijay’s eclectic selection coupled with an ability to hop between
styles and maintain the continuity of a house mix has brought him
praise from all corners of the scene and propelled him into playing
at some of the worlds best clubs and festivals.
His studio work has naturally diversified over the years in tandem
with his deejaying; from his deep house roots on DiY Discs and Drop
Music he’s now producing music with an array of influences,
jazz, techno, soul etc, on labels such as Tangent Beats, Phase 3,
Community Spirit. His releases have attracted a wide spectrum of support
from Theo Parrish to Sasha to Roger Sanchez.
From January 2005 Wijay will be on a 20 date tour of Australia and
New Zealand, after which he plans to be based in Melbourne for at
least 6 months.
