Jazz was born out of a fusion of two diverse musical cultures and there is no reason why that fusion cannot continue - George Russell Dance&Soul was started by a much respected figure in the Singaporean scene in the late 90s - Kay Ling. Feeling the need to promote various DJs and at the same time pushing more interesting music out there...such were the humble beginnings. When she handed the site over to Dean in 2002, he knew it was an oppurtunity not to be missed. He roped in Kaye, then an independant session musician and producer, and together, they built the site into what it is today. Yes that's right, Dance&Soul is bascially 2 blokes running the whole show. The Dance&Soul team of Dean (decks) and Kaye (sax), A.K.A Cosa Nostra, has been pushing the boundaries of musical styles on the dancefloor in Asia. Never content with playing safe, their musical sets take you through all manner of genres, from House to Disco Boogie to Soul to Afrobeat to Funk to Jazz to Hip Hop to Latin rhythms and on, even including the odd Asian grooves. Their website is dedicated to pushing dance music of a slightly different flavor, and that is highly reflected in their sets as well. The leading Singaporean website for underground dance music (with a huge dose of s-o-u-l), Dance&Soul has a good network with other web portals and DJs around the world from Toronto to France to Italy to Germany to Austria Greece to London and Australia. Through these strong links, they share great music with the rest of the world, but more importantly, they help bring it closer to home. They have their own radio show, “Public Nuisance”, released in the middle of 2004. On their site they also host about 15 other stations, including the more high profile ones like Zeljko Karleta’s “TROG” radio show, Nik Weston & Nigel Prankster’s ForwardsBackwards radio show (UK), Tom Wieland’s Trans Europa Express (Austria), Raggy’s Off Limits (UK), Jan Siegmund’s Department Deluxe Radio (Germany), Simon Harrison’s Basic Soul Radio (UK) and Raggy’s “Off Limits” radio show (UK). Branching out into production around 2004, the duo has completed close to an album’s worth of material, albeit remaining unsigned to any record label. Their musical production style is as schizophrenic as their musical taste – from Jazz to Brazilian or Afro styled tracks to House / Boogie to Broken Beats to bits of Jazz Funk and Hip Hop. They have received strong commendations for their work thus far from some heavyweights in the industry, from people like John Kong, to Michael Ruetten, to Paolo Scotti and beyond. On the performance side, they have rocked dancefloors in Australia, Malaysia (Penang and K.L), Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong and London in all sorts of settings: from big fashion shows to outdoor festivals to intimate clubs to bars. Being the only duo in Singapore (and arguably even Asia) with their kind of sound, always expect a little something extra when you listen to them. Just open them ears and minds. Got Soul,
